An icon is an important and enduring symbol, one that is the object of great attention and devotion. Looking at old pictures of Audrey Hepburn got me thinking about style icons.
It seems as though Hepburn is considered as the all time classic iconic style figure. Other classic icons are Jackie Onassis, Grace Kelly, Katharine Hepburn and Princess Diana. These beautiful women carried themselves gracefully and always looked stunning-never even a hair out of place.
So who are the future style icons of the twenty first century? Now it’s much more acceptable to go out in public looking casual. Celebrities are seen out and about, thanks to paparazzi, not always looking their best. Should there be a new sort of style icon, one allows for a balance between celebrity and normal life? When I think of women currently who are style icons, I think of Katie Holmes, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Jessica Parker, Reese Witherspoon, Cate Blanchett and Halle Berry.
Should the classic ideas of a fashion icon be disposed? Maybe a style icon should be considered someone who had their own unique style, not classically beautiful, but perhaps daring enough to not follow the masses. In this case, I would consider Madonna to be the style icon of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Her style, from her hair, to her makeup and clothing are consistently unique and always changing to suit her mood. We should also consider Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Gwen Stefani, Chloë Sevigny, Rachel Bilson, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen and Nicole Richie. While they may not carry the grace and classic manner normally associated with style icons, their fresh n’ funky fashion sense definitely attracts attention.
Who is your favorite style icon, past or present?
